Department of Electronics Engineering

Program Objectives

The Department of Electronics Engineering offers a modern, 4-year undergraduate studies program of 240 ECTS credits. The curriculum is updated regularly by our academic staff, to meet current needs of society and industry. 

• Principal objective of the program is to offer modern, high-level knowledge, skills and competences in the field of Electronics and its applications, both focused and interdisciplinary, combining theoretical knowledge with practical, laboratory experience. Beyond providing students with a solid background in the subject of Electronics and cultivating a methodology of thinking in order to approach and solve science and technology problems, the curriculum aims at a spherical development of the students’ personality and professional conscience.

• Another objective is to bring students in contact with the state of the art in science and technology involved in either purely electronic systems, or complex systems containing electronic components, and to gradually introduce them in departmental research activities. This objective prepares our graduates for academic studies of the second and the third cycle. 

• Finally, the Department systematically pursues interconnection and interaction with industry or service provision institutions, as well as professional organizations, and involves them in the process of improving its curriculum, updating its life-long learning programs and securing the status of its graduates in contemporary labour market. Within this framework, emphasis is placed on the preparation of graduate students for a European professional career, through exchange and mobility programs and co-operations.

 

Undergraduate Curriculum: Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this programme the graduate possesses advanced theoretical and factual knowledge in the field of Electronics, involving a critical understanding of electronic theories, principles and applications. Specifically, 

• The graduate demonstrates knowledge, understanding and ability to apply his/her knowledge in the General Background subjects of the programme (Mathematics, Physics, Electronic Physics, Computer Programming, Circuits, Measurements, CAD and Quality Assurance).

• He/she uses this knowledge as foundation and constructs new knowledge, skills and competences in the Special Background subjects of the programme (Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits, Communication Principles and Transmission Lines, Microcomputers, Linear Systems Theory). 

• Eventually, in the Specialization subjects of the programme (Filters, Power Electronics, Microelectronics-VLSI, Embedded Systems, Microwaves, Antennas, Radio Links, RADAR, Optical / Wireless / Mobile Communications and Networks, Data Networks and Internets, Digital Signal and Image Processing, TV / Radio / Digital Content Broadcasting, Sound Systems, Sensors and Actuators, Control, Microcontrollers, PLCs, Smart Systems and Grids), the graduate connects into a concrete body and critically digests knowledge, skills and competences from the General and the Special Background subjects, spearheading state-of-the-art subjects in Electronics.

The graduate possesses advanced cognitive and practical skills and demonstrates mastery and innovation that enable him/her to address and solve complex and/or unpredictable problems in the specialized fields of analog and digital electronic systems, telecommunications, industrial automation, information processing and communication and data networks. He/she selects the appropriate methods or tools, exploits new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and combines methods, tools and approaches from all taught subjects so as to analyse problems and construct solutions under given specifications or constraints. He/she can test the developed solutions for operability and evaluate their performance. 

The graduate possesses high level competences, both within the field of Electronics and “horizontal” ones. Specifically, 

• The graduate is able to diversify and tailor the solutions he/she develops to meet context-specific needs, priorities and specifications, such as low power / energy-aware / all-analog / low cost / interior or exterior spaces / remote / full- or semi-automated design, etc. 

• The graduate demonstrates the required level of autonomy when working individually as well as the required level of responsibility when working within a (possibly multidisciplinary) team. He/she can manage complex technical and/or professional plans and tasks and undertake responsibility for decision making within unpredictable work or study contexts in Electronics Engineering. 

• The graduate displays commitment in life-long learning principles and practice. He/she diagnoses and manages his/her own personal and professional learning needs and undertakes responsibility for the management of the professional development of individuals or groups of professionals working under his supervision.

• The graduate possesses the level of maturity that allows him/her a critical view of the Electronics Engineering science and profession within the given socio-economic context of operation. He/she is also fully aware of the professional and ethical responsibilities towards the society and the natural environment.
