MSc in Internetworked Electronic Systems

Objectives

The aim of this MSc program is to offer graduate level education, research and practical application of scientific knowledge in advanced subjects within the field of Electronics, Information Processing and Communications, focused on the design and development of relevant systems, their internetworking in the sense of data and information exchange, their self-organization and the optimization of their behaviour and efficiency. In particular, the MSc program has the following objectives:

•High level specialization of greek or foreign university graduates in advanced Electronics, Information and Communications Technologies. Modern electronic systems that integrate scientific results and state-of-the-art technologies can be found today in devices, products and services of areas such as intelligent communication networks, data exchange over the Internet, smart energy grids, (self-organizing) sensor networks, robotics and automations, marine electronics and communications, biomedical systems, digital audiovisual content processing and broadcasting systems, etc. Principal objective of this MSc program, through education and research, is the in-depth theoretic and applied study of the above areas of the Internetworked Electronic Systems field, firstly in order to embed, integrate and advance to a higher level the knowledge, skills and competences students have built during their undergraduate studies, partially or in whole, and secondly, in order to form graduates ready for academic studies of the third cycle.

•Formation of scientific personnel of highly specialized knowledge, skills and competences as well as innovative ways of thinking and acting, that can readily become professionally productive and cover the increasing needs of the greek and international labour market for professionals in Internetworked Electronic Systems.

•Cultivation of professional ethics code, social responsibility and awareness of the impact of science and technology on the social and the natural environment, as well as the development of open-mindedness and a european / international orientation in the graduates.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this MSc program, the graduate possesses highly specialized knowledge in the field of Electronic Systems and their (Inter-)networking, that rely upon and knowledge acquired in academic studies of the first cycle, enhance this knowledge and enable the graduate for innovative thinking and production of original research results in this field.

•In particular, the graduate possesses and demonstrates structured knowledge and understanding of Advance Communications (Wireless, Optical, etc.), Computing and Programming, Pervasive and Mobile Computing, Electronic Design, RF Design, Sensor Networks, Embedded Systems, Audiovisual content processing and broadcasting systems, Smart Grids and Green Electronics, including the state-of-the-art in science and technology used in the design and development of products and services.

•The scope of the program is not restricted to purely electronic systems; it encompasses interdisciplinary fields and complex systems that contain electronic components. Indicatively, these can be medical electronics, marine communications, industrial automations, computing systems, electronic mass communication media, etc.

•As a result, the graduate is expected to be able to take a critical view of new knowledge on his/her own field of study as well as that of the contiguous / neighbouring fields of electrical, computer / information processing or automation engineering.

The graduate possesses specialized skills for the tackling and solving of complex realistic problems in the field of Internetworked Electronic Systems. These skills enable the graduate to hold an active role in research and innovation in the field, to produce new knowledge and procedures and to combine knowledge from various subjects in order to achieve certain goals.

•He/she can carry out complete technical work covering both theoretic (study) and practical (construction) aspects of a given problem. In more detail, he/she can perform and/or supervise problem analysis, definition of specs, design, control, testing, installation, operation, preventive maintenance planning and restoration of possible faults or failures.

•He/she can select and use advanced scientific tools and research methods, especially modern software tools for internetworking and simulation, to analyse the data of a problem and compose a solution while documenting his/her choices.

•He/she can diagnose needs and cultivate new skills to achieve goals on new and emerging subjects as well as assess performance. He/she can transfer his/her analytic and synthetic skills in a new or unknown context, within a broader or interdisciplinary framework contiguous to his/her own.

The graduate possesses competencies of management and useful transformation of the data of a work or study that are complex, unpredictable, possibly incomplete or contradictory and require a new approach.

•He/she can discern research opportunities and undertake initiatives to investigate, design, complete and integrate a solution design and implementation task. He/she can produce new knowledge, indispensable when facing technological challenges of the future.

•He/she undertakes tasks and jobs of considerable responsibility, leads, motivates and coordinates the work and performance of individuals and teams. He/she diagnoses and manages his/her own personal and professional learning needs and undertakes responsibility for the management of the academic and professional development of individuals or groups of professionals working under his/her supervision and for the evaluation of their performance.

•He/she is aware of the role and the impact of Internetworked Electronic Systems on production, society and environment, can hold a critical standing towards these issues and document; he/she can act and behave on a strict professional and ethics code.

•Finally, he/she possesses the maturity and competence to carry on his/her studies to the third cycle (PhD level) with increased autonomy.
